The 400 kV Porțile de Fier – Anina – Reșița Line: A Story of Courage and Performance

High in the Mehedinți Mountains, among deep ravines and alpine ridges, a team of brave people erected the most complex and difficult high-voltage line built in Romania in the last three decades. Porțile de Fier – Anina – Reșița overhead line stretches for 117 kilometers, crossing mountains, dense forests and isolated areas, with a single goal: to modernize the national energy infrastructure and reduce electricity losses.

A Seemingly Impossible Mission

The construction of this line was a huge challenge. The high-voltage poles were placed in extreme places, where only eagles used to reach. Some sections were only accessible on all fours, and the adverse weather – from torrential rain and mud to strong blizzards – was a constant adversary.

Mixed teams of Romanian and Nigerian specialists worked side by side to meet each challenge. It was an exceptional collective effort, where experience and courage were perfectly combined.

Electromontaj once again demonstrated that the impossible becomes possible through work and determination. Whether they were installing poles at 900 meters altitude, working in sub-zero temperatures or crossing chasms suspended in cages above pits, our teams excelled.

A Major Achievement for the National Energy System

The 400 kV Overhead Power Line Porțile de Fier – Anina – Reșița is the most technically complex and difficult line project carried out in Romania in the last 30 years, its route crossing mostly mountainous areas with rugged and difficult to access terrain.

It has a total length of 117 kilometers and is made up of two sections: a new construction with 259 poles (the Porțile de Fier – Anina section), with a length of 81.1 kilometers, and the modernization of an existing line with 142 poles (the Anina – Reșița section), with a length of 36 kilometers.

Noua linie de 400 kV este esențială pentru securitatea energetică a României, permițând evacuarea eficientă a energiei produse la Hidrocentrala Porțile de Fier 1 și interconectarea cu sistemele energetice ale țărilor vecine.

The completion of this line marks a new era for Romania’s energy infrastructure. It is a testament to the professionalism and determination of the Electromontaj team, which remains dedicated to the development of the national energy system, regardless of the challenges it faces.

The works were carried out by the ELECTROMONTAJ S.A. BUCURESTI – ROMELECTRO S.A Association, with subcontractors: EMFOR MONTAJ SA, SC ELECTROMONTAJ SA Sibiu and SC ELECTROMONTAJ SA Cluj. The line was designed by the Bucharest Institute of Energy Studies and Design.
